Hackers not just hit big corporations
It is a misconception to think that hackers just hit big corporations’computer networks to steal customers’ credit card and other personal information. For each big corporation there are 1,000 small and middle-sized businesses that are at risk from hackers attacks from the Web.
A nationwide poll at businesses with less than 500 employees found that 59 percent think their company is safe; however, less than 45 percent are protected against phishing, Wi-Fi attacks, networks intrusions and dangerous Web contents. Just 12 percent had protection for online fraud such as pharming; which is a cracker’s attack aiming to redirect a website’s traffic to another, bogus website (Wikipedia).
In phishing attacks, perpetrators fish for personal and financial information by sending email messages from seemingly legitimate Web sites. Pharming attacks are similar, but they can be harder to detect and can affect a greater number of people.
