Our national security is not as secure as they want us to believe
How secure do I feel for my family every night I go to sleep that the movie The Day After would not become a reality? I am ashamed to admit but very, very little.
We have been spending billion of dollars to improve the technology, weaponry and different agencies and forces to secure the American people; however, that money was spent to secure businesses, which failed to provide quality and security.
Would not you be scared after reading this news? The inspector general for the Energy Department acknowledged that the office in charge of protecting American technical secrets about nuclear weapons from foreign spies was missing 20 desktop computers, at least 14 of which have been used for classified information. My gash, we are talking about 20 desktops, not notebooks that you could put inside a briefcase. It shows how easy things could be removed in front of everyone view in high security places.
The sad part it is not the first time it happened. As a matter of fact, it was the 13th time in more than four years that an audit has found the department whose national laboratories and factories do most of the work in designing and building nuclear warheads, has lost control over computers used in working on the bombs. How much of all this do the terrorists already know?
The auditing highlighted that aside from computers it could not find, the department was also using computers not listed in its inventory, and one computer listed as destroyed was in fact being used.
We have the latest technology to put a man on the moon, to have co-ownership of a space station, sophisticated weapons and so on; however, we cannot implement a devise to track hardware the same way the justice system can track convicted under has arrest use. We would not only know where the hardware is physically located but we could know if it is being taken away unauthorized. Maybe this is too simple for our high rank and high pay official to do, they might need billion of dollars and years to come up with a solution.
